Anshin-Ryu was the style of Karate that was founded by Keith Bell in the early 1980's. Keith Bell was a 4th Dan in Wado-Ryu Karate and regularly trained under Kanazawa Sensei. It was this influence of Shotokan Karate that Keith incorporated into his training and adapted to his Wado-Ryu which bore the new style Anshin-Ryu (The way of the Heart & Mind). Anshin-Ryu in its basic form is still very much Wado-Ryu. All the Kata are Wado-Ryu based, but there are advanced Kata taken from other styles. The influence of Shotokan is very evident in the deep stances and power techniques. The symbol for Anshin-Ryu is the white dove of Wado-Ryu below the Shotokan Tiger.

Keith was the founder of The Sentenashi Karate Kosai, which had clubs all over the North East of England, the main club being in Darlington and spreading as far as Barnard Castle and Catterick Garrison. At its height the Kosai boasted over 500 members and was very successful at both local and national tournaments. Sometime in the early 1990's the Kosai disbanded and some of the clubs switched back to Wado-Ryu or closed. Newton Aycliffe Karate Club and Hurworth Karate Club stayed loyal to the style but operated independently. In 2000 Andy Dawson and Dave Noble, both of Newton Aycliffe's club opened Zanshin-Kai Karate in Woodham, Co Durham in an attempt to let the style progress after being left with no guidance for such a long time. They brought in modern self defence techniques and groundwork. The training is very pragmatic in approach while still remaining with the fundamental principles of Kihon, Kata and Kumite. Zanshin-Kai Karate are members of Cobra Martial Arts and The Isle of Mann Federation.
